What Are The Benefits Of Collagen Powder?

Collagen is a substance that holds the body together. Collagen is a protein in the human body, found in the bones, skin, muscles, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. It’s also one of the most vital proteins your body needs to function. It’s like a glue, that holds the body together.

There are sixteen different types of collagen but the main ones in our bodies are types 1, 2 and 3. Types 1 and 3 are found in the skin, muscles, connective tissues, bones, and IG tract. Type 2 very important for joint health.

As you age, your body produces less and less collagen. Drinking beverages containing collagen powder, made from animal or fish, may be beneficial by helping offset some of that collagen loss.

In this article, you will learn what are the benefits of collagen powder.

Nutritional Benefits Of Collagen Powder

When you consume collagen protein powder or collagen containing foods your digestive system breaks down into amino acids. The amino acids are absorbed and used as building blocks that support collagen production throughout the body. Collagen is also very easy for us to digest.

Here are the top foods to eat to boost collagen naturally:

  • The beef bone broth is one of the rare foods that actually contain collagen, while most foods contain antioxidants and other nutrients to help the body synthesize collagen.
  • Chicken and turkey broth are great for supporting the joints.
  • Fish is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which helps to reduce inflammation and build healthy skin cells.
  • Leafy greens
  • Citrus. Vitamin C is necessary to convert your amino acid building blocks into collagen.
  • Eggs
  • Tomatoes
  • Garlic
  • Pumpkin seed
  • Avocado
  • Chia seeds

May Ease Joint Pain

Collagen has been shown to reduce the risk of joint deterioration, improve joint pain and regenerate cartilage, which is the key to keep you moving like you used to:)

May Reduce Cellulite

Besides keeping your skin look healthy and youthful, collagen may also help to improve the appearance of cellulite. That’s because Types 1 and 2 collagen increase the dermal density(thickness) of the skin improving its elasticity.

Improve Health Of Skin And Hair

As we age, collagen production declines. You will notice it by a looser skin, more wrinkles, and less elasticity. Increasing collagen intake can help your skin look firmer and more youthful. A collagen powder drink may also help the skin retain moisture and look plumper.

Strengthens Nails And Teeth

If your nails are peeling and splitting, well a lack of collagen could be the reason. But everybody is different, and saying that consuming collagen powder or bone broth can definitely make your nails healthy and strong, is irresponsible. It could be many other reasons for nail disorders.

Helps Build Muscle

Collagen is a big component of muscle tissue so it can have a big impact when it comes to building muscle mass. Remember that retaining muscle mass is crucial as you age since it helps support bone health, posture and burns more calories.

May Improve Digestive Health

If you suffer from the leaky gut syndrome, collagen can be super helpful. It helps break down proteins and healing damaged cell walls infusing it with healing amino acids. The amino acids in collagen build the tissue that lines the colon and IG tract, so it helps treat gastrointestinal symptoms and disorders like IBS, leaky gut syndrome, acid reflux, Crohn’s disease.

How To Choose Protein Powder

When buying collagen protein powder or collagen supplements, look for type 1 and 3 or 2 type of collagen, that tailor your needs. Type 1 and 3 collagen are used to support bones, thicken hair, strengthen nails, minimize wrinkles improve skin elasticity and hydration. Type 2 is great to support joints, stiff knees and lower back function.

It’s better to take type 2 separately, but type 1 and 3 can be taken together. If you decide to take all 3 types of collagen powder, try to space them out by several hours.

For the highest quality, I would recommend choosing collagen products:

  • Made from organic and/or grass feed cows
  • Sugar-free
  • Non-GMO
  • Pesticide-free
  • Hydrolyzed (this is a broken down form that easy to absorb)

Collagen is flavorless and dissolves completely, so you can add it to pretty much anything. I prefer to add it to my morning drinks, and chocolate chip muffins! Please share in the comments what is your favorite way to use collagen powder.

Collagen is a great superfood with a lot of health benefits. I hope you are inspired to incorporate it into your favorite drinks, or recipes.

Now you understand the benefits of collagen and you know how easy it is to consume foods to help you produce more collagen, it’s time to start paying attention to your intake level.

Although collagen powder supplements are generally considered safe, they can cause gastrointestinal upset. Before taking collagen powders, please consult with your health provider.

  1. Hi! Nice article on collagen. Collagen supplements are pretty popular, however, I didn’t know there are so many different types. I might recommend the type 2 collagen to my parents for their joint health.
Just one questions: You mention that collagen may improve digestive health. Which type of collagen has this benefit? My mother also has issues with her stomach, maybe collagen may help?

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thank you Kai for your comment and question. Type 3 collagen that is combined with type 1 helps with digestive system. But I would suggest your mom to check with her practitioner before taking collagen supplements.

  2. I never realised there was so many benefit to collagen powder and I didn’t believe that eggs and avocado can boost it. Seriously informative post and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this – just a quick note to say many thanks for your hard work! Vey easy to read and follow!

    1. Hi Montana! Everything that you consume while breastfeeding will pass into your breast milk. It’s very important that you always need to check any supplement with your doctor, if you are breastfeeding or pregnant, including collagen supplements.

  3. Hi Alyona. Thanks for this article on collagen. I have used products that contain collagen for external use but not for internal use. One question that I’m not sure on – are these products collagen only proteins or do they tend to use other kinds of protein and add some collagen to that? And are they suitable for vegetarians? Look forward to hearing from you.

    1. Hi Gail! Thank you for your comment and question. I would love to help. Collagen is some type of protein, but it’s not complete, because it doesn’t have all 9 essential amino acids, that complete protein has. Collagen protein is different then whey protein, because of high level of amino acids. Collagen food sources are always animal based. But if you still eat fish, there is a fish collagen powder. You can check my new post “Best Collagen Supplements Reviews”

      I hope it helps
      Best wishes,

    1. From my research, I didn’t find vegan collagen supplements. But adding certain foods in your diet it’s a great alternative option. Being a vegan, I’m sure you are making smoothies, the combination of pineapple, cucumber, kale, and banana it’s a delicious vegan and vegetarian alternative of collagen supplement.
